Upholsterer in Cheadle.

Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley and Heald Green share SK8, about 30 minutes from our Stalybridge workshop. We do not get much work from this corner yet, so this page is plain about what the trip involves: a photo quote first, a fabric showroom worth the drive, and advice on which armchairs, footstools and dining chairs are worth keeping.

The detail

Upholstery in Cheadle: the detail.

Thirty minutes out, so we start with photos

SK8 is not somewhere we get a lot of work from yet, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. At around half an hour from Grosvenor Street, the sensible way to start is a set of photos. Send the front, the side, the underside if you can tip it, and the label if there is one. From those we can usually tell you whether the frame is solid hardwood or board, whether the springs have gone, and roughly what a recover involves. The written quote normally comes back the same working day.

Choosing the fabric

Some people find this page while they are still searching for furnishing fabric in Cheadle, and choosing the cloth before the upholsterer is a sensible order to do it in. Our showroom at the workshop carries pattern books from the mills we buy from, which you can handle at full size and hold up to the light rather than judge on a screen. Browse the fabrics page first if you want a starting point. Bring a cushion cover or a paint card from the room when you come: a colour that suits a sunny Cheadle Hulme conservatory can look quite different in a north-facing lounge, and seeing the cloth beside something from the house settles it faster than any photograph.

If you have already found a fabric elsewhere, that is fine too. Send us its width and pattern repeat before you order, and we will work out the metreage so you do not end up a metre short on a patterned cloth. The one caveat: we cannot warrant how a fabric we did not supply will wear.

Armchairs, footstools and chairs worth keeping

The pieces that tend to justify the drive from SK8 are ones with a good frame under a tired cover: a wingback or armchair that has sat in the same bay window for years, a footstool that matches it, a set of dining chairs from a house move. Recovering is not always the cheaper option, and we will tell you when it is not. Our article on whether it is worth reupholstering a sofa sets out how we make that call.

Where a chair needs more than a cover, the repairs and restoration service covers loose joints and rails, re-springing, rebuilding a sagging seat, and leather repair and re-dyeing. Dining chairs are covered separately on the dining chair reupholstery page.

Timings and the next step

Most domestic jobs take two to four weeks from the day the piece arrives, and single dining chairs are often back within a week. The quote tells you the timescale before anything is stripped. When you are ready, send photos through the quote form or on WhatsApp, and say whether you would rather drop the piece off or have it collected.

“Had some wicker furniture cushions covered. Over the moon. Gave the furniture a new lease of life. They look so expensive and the detail was perfect.”

Local FAQs

Common questions from Cheadle customers.

Is Cheadle Hulme close enough to collect a single armchair?
Yes, but weigh it up. SK8 is inside Greater Manchester, so collection and return is around £75 + VAT both ways, confirmed in your quote. For one chair or a footstool that is a noticeable share of the bill, so if it fits in a car, dropping it at the workshop is free and lets you look at fabrics while you are there.
Do you cover Gatley and Heald Green as well as Cheadle?
Yes. This page covers the whole of SK8: Cheadle village, Cheadle Hulme, Gatley and Heald Green. Quotes, collection charge and timescales are the same across the district. Bramhall is SK7 and has its own page, and so does Didsbury across the Mersey.
Where can I see upholstery fabric near Cheadle?
Our fabric showroom is at the Stalybridge workshop, about 30 minutes from SK8, with books from the mills we buy from. It is open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 2. Bring a photo of the room, or a cushion from the sofa, and we can hold cloth against it in daylight.
