Upholsterer in Chorlton.

Chorlton is about thirty-two minutes from our Stalybridge workshop, across the south side of the city. We get little work from M21 so far, and the job we most expect here is a single chair someone loves: second-hand, inherited or a statement piece, that deserves a better cover and a sound frame rather than the tip.

The detail

Upholstery in Chorlton: the detail.

The one chair worth saving

If you are in Chorlton with a chair that came from a relative, a house clearance or a second-hand shop, it probably has the same story as most: a frame built properly, and a cover and padding that are long past their best. That is exactly the kind of job a proper upholstery workshop is for.

What a chair needs depends on what is under the cover. Many older armchairs have coil springs tied in place, hessian and hair or fibre stuffing, which we rebuild by hand. Later ones have rubber webbing and foam, which is quicker to renew. Either way the chair is stripped to the frame, loose joints are reglued and the seat is rebuilt before the new cover goes on. Our reupholstery and rejuvenation page explains the process, and repairs and restoration covers frames, springs and leather.

Choosing a fabric that suits the chair

A chair from the 1960s and a Victorian nursing chair want very different fabrics. We buy from specialist mills and keep their ranges in the showroom at the workshop, so you can hold the samples against the chair’s shape rather than guess from a screen. The fabric library is a good place to begin a shortlist. If you already have a fabric in mind, from a designer or a mill of your own choosing, tell us the name and quantity with your quote request, and we will say whether it is suitable for upholstery and how much the chair needs.

Interior designers working on a Chorlton house can send a specification and we will quote against it. See our page for interior designers and specifiers.

Getting the chair to Stalybridge

We are the other side of Manchester from M21, about thirty-two minutes away. A single armchair fits in most car boots, and dropping it at the workshop is free. Collection is available too, at around £75 + VAT for both journeys, which makes more sense for a sofa or several pieces at once.

Start with photos on WhatsApp or the quote form: the front, a side view, the underneath if you can turn it over, and a close-up of anything broken. A free, written quote usually comes back the same working day. Most domestic jobs take two to four weeks at the bench.

Dining chairs and headboards

Two other jobs suit Chorlton’s older terraces and semis: a set of dining chairs that has been recovered once already and now needs new foam as well as cloth, and a headboard for a bedroom. Our guide on how to reupholster a dining chair shows what is involved if you are tempted to do a drop-in seat yourself.

“Lovely people who care about what they do. If you want a fantastic choice of fabrics then look no further. We had 6 cushions, from dining chairs, stripped and recovered in a fabric of our choice. They were ready on the date agreed and we are so very happy with them. Don't put up with soft furnishing that are past their sell by date: get them sorted. I would recommend Valley Upholstery and I will use them again.”

Local FAQs

Common questions from Chorlton customers.

Is it worth reupholstering a second-hand armchair I have bought?
It depends on the frame, not the fabric. A solid hardwood frame with sound joints is worth recovering, even if the padding and cover are finished. A frame that rocks, has split rails or is made from stapled board may cost more to put right than the chair is worth. Send photos front, side and underneath, and we will tell you before you commit.
Do you collect from Chorlton, and what does it cost?
Yes. Collection from Chorlton is around £75 + VAT for both journeys. As a single armchair fits in most cars, bringing it to the Stalybridge workshop yourself is often the better option, and it is free. You can choose the fabric in the showroom while you are there.
Do you cover Chorlton Park as well as Chorlton-cum-Hardy?
Yes. This page covers the M21 district, including Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Chorlton Park. The same terms apply across it: a free written quote from photos, usually the same working day, free drop-off at the workshop, or collection at around £75 + VAT both ways.
