Upholsterer in Hattersley.

Hattersley is about ten minutes from our Stalybridge workshop. This page is for the chair someone in the house relies on every day: a riser recliner that has started to struggle, an armchair whose seat has sunk, or cushions so soft that getting up is harder than it should be. We quote from photos and can collect, so nobody has to carry anything.

The detail

Upholstery in Hattersley: the detail.

The chair that matters most

Most homes have one chair that gets more use than every other seat put together. For a lot of people it is a riser recliner or a high-backed armchair, and when it stops working properly, the day gets harder straight away. The seat sinks and standing up takes more effort. The mechanism starts to judder or hesitate. The fabric on the arms wears through where hands push down to stand. That is the work this page is about, whether the chair is yours or belongs to a parent you help look after.

Riser recliners: keep the mechanism, renew the rest

A riser recliner that still lifts and reclines usually does not need replacing just because the fabric has worn or the seat has gone soft. We strip the upholstery, check and service the mechanism, rebuild the seat and recover the chair. Our riser recliner recover shows one done in the workshop: the mechanism was kept and serviced, and the chair went back in a floral fabric chosen by its owner.

Where a mechanism has failed, repairs and restoration covers recliner mechanism replacement as well as broken frames and sagging seats. Once the chair is opened up we can see what is really going on, and if we find more than the photos showed, we tell you before doing anything extra.

Firmer seats make standing easier

Deep, soft cushions look comfortable but can make getting out of a chair a struggle. When we replace seat foam we can go firmer than the original, and we will recommend a grade for how the chair is actually used rather than just matching what was there. If the cushion lifts out, it can come in on its own and be cut to match; foam cut to size explains the grades we stock. For sofas with the same problem, replacement sofa cushions covers seat and back cushions together.

If you look after someone, it is also worth asking about wipe-clean fabrics. We have them in the showroom alongside softer weaves, and we can talk through which will stand up to daily use and regular cleaning.

No fuss from Hattersley

The workshop is about ten minutes away. If the chair is too heavy to move, or nobody in the house should be lifting it, we collect it and bring it back. Send photos of the chair from the front and side, and of the doorway and any steps, by WhatsApp or the quote form. A written quote usually comes back the same working day.

If you are arranging the work for a relative, that is fine. Tell us who will be at home on the day and whether there is anything we should know about access. Most domestic jobs are back within two to four weeks. If the chair is the only one the person can comfortably use, say so when you ask for a quote, so we can talk through timing before it leaves the house.

Local FAQs

Common questions from Hattersley customers.

Can you collect a riser recliner from Hattersley?
Yes. Hattersley is about ten minutes from the workshop, so collection and return is around £55 + VAT both ways, confirmed in your quote. Riser recliners are heavy, so we do the lifting. Send a photo of the chair and of the door and any steps it has to come through, and we will plan the collection from that.
Can I get firmer foam for a parent's chair in Hattersley without sending the whole chair?
If the seat cushion lifts out, yes. Bring it to the Stalybridge workshop, or ask someone to drop it in, and we will cut new foam to the same shape in a firmer grade. If the seat is built into the chair, the chair needs to come in, and we can collect it from Hattersley.
