Upholsterer in Knutsford.

Knutsford is about forty minutes from our Stalybridge workshop, over the Cheshire border. WA16 is not an area we get much work from, so we will not pretend to be local. What we offer Knutsford is a careful, quoted-in-writing route for the pieces worth travelling for: period chairs, good sofas and headboards, fabric chosen from samples, and specification work for interior designers.

Upholstery in Knutsford: the detail.

Why Knutsford work comes to Stalybridge

Knutsford has plenty of fine old furniture and very few reasons to send it forty minutes up the motorway unless the work justifies it. The pieces that do make the trip are the ones where the craft matters more than the convenience: a Georgian or Victorian chair that needs its seat rebuilt properly, a sofa with a frame worth keeping, or a headboard that has to match a scheme exactly. Our reupholstery and rejuvenation service is a full strip-back to the frame, with webbing, springs and stuffing rebuilt as the piece needs, not new cloth stapled over old problems.

The workshop has been doing this since 1978, first as J.P. Hirst Upholstery, and is accredited by the Guild of Master Craftsmen. If you would like to see the showroom and talk a piece through before deciding, the workshop is open on weekdays and on Saturday mornings.

Samples and a first chair before the full commitment

For houses around the Heath and out towards Tatton, the fabric is often the whole point of the job. The showroom carries pattern books from the mills we buy from, from everyday weaves through to Italian jacquards and real leathers, and you can look through the ranges online before choosing samples.

On a set of dining chairs we can recover one chair first, so you and anyone else involved in the room can see the fabric on the actual shape before the rest is done. Designers can find how we handle specification, fabric supplied by the client, and staged sign-off on our interior designers and specifiers page.

Restoration, not just recovering

Older pieces from WA16 often need more than cloth: a loose joint, a split rail, broken springs or missing buttons. Our repairs and restoration work puts the structure right first, so the new cover is sitting on something sound. If a piece is not worth rescuing, we will tell you before you spend anything.

Traditional chairs often still have hand-tied springs and natural stuffings under the cover. Where those are sound we keep them and rebuild around them; where they have failed, the quote explains what a modern replacement would change in the look and feel of the seat, so the decision is yours.

Hotels, restaurants and venues

Contract work travels further than domestic work, so Knutsford’s hotels, restaurants and wedding venues are well within reach. We quote venue seating in Crib 5 fabric with combustion-modified foam, itemise every chair and banquette, and plan the work around your bookings. The Townhouse Hotel brasserie project, with 70 chairs and a curved booth, shows the scale we handle.

Getting a Knutsford quote

Send photos, rough measurements and the fabric reference if you have one through the quote form or WhatsApp. You get a written, itemised quote back, usually the same working day, with collection from WA16 priced by distance. Larger or multi-piece jobs get a site visit first.

Local FAQs

Common questions from Knutsford customers.

Do you collect from Knutsford and the WA16 villages?
Yes, by arrangement. Knutsford is in Cheshire East, outside Greater Manchester, so collection from WA16, including Mobberley, Mere and High Legh, is priced by distance and confirmed in your written quote before anything is booked. Bringing the piece to the workshop yourself is free.
I have a designer's fabric already. Can you work with it?
Yes. Send the fabric reference, the width and the pattern repeat along with photos of the piece, and we will tell you how many metres it needs and whether the cloth suits the shape. We can also supply fabric from the mills we buy from if the scheme is still open.
Is Knutsford too far for a single chair?
Not if the chair is worth doing. Distance-priced collection is a bigger share of the bill on one small chair, so many people drop it at the workshop, or send it alongside another piece. Send photos first and the quote will show both costs, so you can decide.
