Recover or replace: the question we get from WN7
Most Leigh enquiries are some version of the same question: is this sofa worth doing, or should I buy a new one? At fifty minutes from the workshop, we would rather answer that honestly from photos than send a van to find out. The answer depends on three things we can usually judge from pictures: what the frame is made of, what state the springs and seat are in, and how much you like the piece.
An older suite bought for a Leigh terrace or semi was often built with a hardwood frame and proper springs. If that is what you have, a full sofa and suite recover keeps a piece that already fits the room, with new foam and a fabric you have chosen. What we look for in your photos
Send a photo from the front and one from the side, one of the underside or back if the lining can be lifted, and a close-up of anything that is torn, sagging or broken. A label or a brand name helps too. From those we can usually tell you whether the frame is solid timber or board, whether the seat problem is foam, webbing or springs, and whether a full reupholstery is justified.
If it is not, we will tell you. Paying for collection and a recover on a frame that will not last is money you will not get back.
Sometimes it is only the cushions
A lot of sofas that look finished are really only suffering from tired foam. If the covers are in decent condition, replacement sofa cushions with new foam cut to your sizes can be collected from the workshop when ready, and the sofa never leaves the house. It is the cheapest way to find out how much life the rest of the piece has in it. If new foam brings the seats back but the frame creaks or the arms are loose, you will know it is time to think about the rest.
Favourite chairs and recliners
Older Leigh customers, and the people looking after them, often have one chair that matters more than anything else in the room. A recliner that has stopped working properly or an armchair whose seat has sunk can often be put right through our repairs and restoration work.
