The detail

Upholstery in Marple: the detail.

Pieces worth doing properly

Marple, Marple Bridge and Mellor have plenty of older stone and Victorian houses, and older houses tend to come with furniture people want to keep: a buttoned armchair, a carved dining set, a good-quality sofa bought to last. When someone in SK6 gets in touch, the question is rarely whether a piece can be made to look new. It is whether it can be done properly, in the right fabric, without losing what made it worth keeping.

That starts with the frame. We check it before quoting on anything significant, and once a piece is stripped in the workshop we tell you what we find before going further. Where a chair was built with webbing, hessian, hand-tied springs and horsehair, we can restore it the same way. Where it was built with modern foam, modern materials make more sense. Repairs and restoration covers the traditional work in detail.

Leather: repair before you recover

A leather sofa with a scuffed arm or a split seat panel does not always need recovering. Our repair work includes leather repair, re-dye and patch matching, and on a good-quality suite that is often the better value. Where the hide has cracked across several panels, or the colour has faded unevenly, a recover in new leather or fabric may be the honest answer. Send close-ups of the damage and a photo of the whole piece, and we will tell you which side of that line it falls.

Fabric first, cutting second

For a design-led room, the fabric is the decision that matters most, and it should not be made from a thumbnail on a screen. We have a fabric showroom at the workshop and supply fabric from the mills we buy from, so you can hold samples against a cushion, a paint card or photos of the room before anything is ordered. You can browse our fabrics first to narrow the choice. If you are working with an interior designer, we are happy to quote to their specification; our page for interior designers and specifiers explains how we work with them.

Dining chairs are a good example of where choice matters. A set of six looks very different in a velvet, a linen weave or a leather, and the fabric has to cope with daily use as well as look right, so we will tell you how each option wears before you commit.

From SK6 to Stalybridge

We regularly get work from SK6, which also takes in Romiley, Bredbury and Compstall. The workshop is about twenty-five minutes from Marple, so for anything that fits in a car, bringing it in costs nothing and lets you choose fabric in person. For larger pieces we collect and return.

Send photos by WhatsApp or through the quote form and a written quote usually comes back the same working day. Most domestic jobs take two to four weeks. If you want a sense of cost first, our guide to reupholstery costs sets out the main factors.

“Had some wicker furniture cushions covered. Over the moon. Gave the furniture a new lease of life. They look so expensive and the detail was perfect.”

Local FAQs

Common questions from Marple customers.

What does collection from Marple cost?
Marple is inside Greater Manchester but around twenty-five minutes from the workshop, so collection is around £75 + VAT both ways, confirmed in your quote. The same applies to Marple Bridge and Mellor. Bringing a piece to Grosvenor Street, Stalybridge, yourself is free, and you can look at fabric in the showroom while you are there.
Can you repair a leather sofa from Marple rather than recover it?
Often, yes. Our repair work includes leather repair, re-dye and patch matching, as well as broken frames and sagging seats. Send close-up photos of the damaged panels and one of the whole sofa, and we will tell you whether a repair will blend in or whether those panels need replacing.
Can I see fabric samples before committing?
Yes. The workshop has a fabric showroom and we supply fabric from the mills we buy from, so you can compare samples against a cushion or photos of the room before anything is ordered. If you are working with an interior designer, we are happy to quote to their specification and fabric.
