SK22 · 22 min from workshop
Upholsterer in New Mills.
New Mills is about twenty-two minutes from our Stalybridge workshop, further out than most of the places we work, and we would rather be straight about that. What works well from SK22 is a photo quote first, then either bringing the piece in yourself or dropping cushions and foam off at the workshop.

The detail
Upholstery in New Mills: the detail.
A straight answer on distance
New Mills is in Derbyshire, about twenty-two minutes from our workshop on Grosvenor Street in Stalybridge. We do not get much work from SK22, and we would rather say that than dress it up. The workshop still suits New Mills well for three kinds of job: cushions and foam that can travel without the furniture, pieces good enough to be worth the drive, and anything we can price properly from photographs.
Start with photos
Every quote starts the same way. Photograph the piece from the front, side and back, add close-ups of the worn or damaged areas and rough measurements, and send them by WhatsApp or through the quote form. A written quote usually comes back the same working day, so you know the cost before deciding whether to bring it in or have us collect. For larger jobs we arrange a site visit rather than quoting blind.
Cushions and foam travel well
Much of what makes a sofa uncomfortable is in the cushions, and cushions are the easiest part of any upholstery job to move. Bring an old cushion in and we cut new foam from it, which is the most reliable pattern because it already matches the cover. Cushions, covers and foam cut to size fit in a car, so you can drop them at the workshop and collect them when they are done. Most domestic foam orders are ready within a week. Foam cut to size covers the grades, from soft seat pads to firm contract foam.
Narrowboats, caravans and campervans
The Peak Forest Canal runs through the Newtown side of New Mills, and the town is a natural starting point for Peak District trips. Boat cushions need foam that will not hold water, so for marine seating we use dryfast foam made for the job. Caravan, motorhome and campervan cushion sets can be recovered, re-foamed or made from templates where the shapes are awkward, with wipe-clean and pet-friendly fabrics available. Most caravan cushion jobs take two to three weeks. Caravan cushion replacement explains what to photograph so we can quote before anything is sent.
Pieces worth the drive
New Mills grew up around its mills in the gorge where the Sett meets the Goyt, and the older stone houses in the town often hold furniture that has been in a family a long time. A solid-framed armchair or suite can be worth rebuilding when a cheaper modern one would not be. We check the frame first and tell you honestly which side of that line your piece falls; our guide on whether it is worth reupholstering a sofa sets out the same questions.
We also take contract work well beyond Tameside. A New Mills pub, cafe or holiday let with worn fixed seating gets the same approach as anywhere else: Crib 5 fabric, combustion-modified foam, an itemised quote and work planned around your trading hours. See commercial upholstery for how that works.

“Very pleased with the service I received. My swivel recliner chair was collected from my home and returned to me having been repaired. It needed new webbing and was reupholstered and properly refixed to the base. I'm very happy with the results.”

Local FAQs
Common questions from New Mills customers.
- Is New Mills too far for you to collect a sofa?
- No. New Mills is in Derbyshire, outside Greater Manchester, so collection is priced by distance and confirmed in your quote. For a full suite that is usually the sensible option. For cushions or a single chair, bringing it or the cushions to the workshop normally makes more sense.
- Can I drop off boat or caravan cushions from New Mills?
- Yes. Cushions, covers and foam cut to size can be dropped off at our Stalybridge workshop and collected when ready. We do not take work by post or courier. For boat cushions we stock dryfast foam, which is made for marine and outdoor use. Photograph each cushion top-down with rough measurements and we will quote before you bring anything in.
- Is it worth driving a chair from New Mills to Stalybridge?
- For a chair you care about, usually yes. It is about twenty-two minutes each way, dropping off is free, and you can choose fabric in the showroom while you are there. Single dining chairs are often ready within a week, and most other domestic jobs take two to four weeks.
