Upholsterer in Prestbury.

Prestbury sits on the River Bollin just north of Macclesfield, about 35 minutes from our Stalybridge workshop. We get very little work from SK10 so far, and the pieces worth that journey are usually period or family chairs that need rebuilding properly, with springs, webbing and stuffing put right, not just a new cover stretched over the top.

The detail

Upholstery in Prestbury: the detail.

Old houses, old chairs

Prestbury has timber-framed buildings along its village street and a Norman chapel in the churchyard of St Peter’s, and in a village this old, the furniture worth rebuilding is often old too: wingbacks, nursing chairs, button-backs, and dining chairs older than anyone who sits on them. Chairs like that were built to be taken apart and rebuilt, and that is the work that justifies the drive to Stalybridge.

Rebuilding, not just recovering

On an old chair, the cover is usually the last thing to fail. Underneath, the webbing sags, the springs shift or lose their ties, and the stuffing packs down until you can feel the rails. Putting new fabric over that gives you a smart chair that is still uncomfortable, and it will not last.

We strip back to the frame, repair loose joints and rails, re-web and re-tie the springs, and rebuild the seat before any fabric goes on. For antique pieces we use traditional materials, horsehair, hessian and hand-tied springs, rather than replacing everything with foam. Leather can be repaired, re-dyed and patch-matched. The detail is on our repairs and restoration page, and reupholstery and rejuvenation covers the full recover.

Chairs with a story

Sometimes a chair matters for who owned it rather than what it is worth. One of the jobs we are proudest of is a late father’s wingback chair, covered in the wool of his Greater Manchester Police uniform. If you have a piece like that, send photos and tell us what it means to you. It changes what we suggest.

Fabric for a period piece

Choosing a fabric for an old chair is partly about pattern and partly about scale: a busy print can swamp a small nursing chair, and a thin cloth will not survive a working dining chair. Our showroom at the workshop has books from the mills we buy from, and our fabrics page gives a starting point. For a chair going back into a period room, bring a photograph of that room with you, as the pattern books make more sense beside the actual panelling, curtains or rug. You can also supply your own fabric. Send the width and pattern repeat, and we will work out the metreage before you order. Where an interior designer is handling the room, we work to their specification.

From Prestbury to the workshop

Prestbury is in Cheshire East, so collection is priced by distance and confirmed in your written quote. Mottram St Andrew and Adlington are quoted the same way. Bringing the piece in yourself is free. Most domestic jobs take two to four weeks, and a single dining chair is often back within a week. Start with photos of the front, back and underside through the quote form or on WhatsApp; the quote usually comes back the same working day.

“We recently had two leather armchairs re-covered. The workmanship was second to none, absolutely fantastic. We went for a large check pattern and didn't realise what a difficult job it was going to be for them matching all the lines up, well they did an awesome job, we are so impressed and very happy with the end result. I highly recommend Valley Upholstery if anyone is thinking of updating their furniture, well done and thank you.”

Local FAQs

Common questions from Prestbury customers.

Can you restore an antique chair from Prestbury using traditional methods?
Yes. Traditional restoration with horsehair, hessian and hand-tied springs is part of our repairs and restoration work, along with frame repairs to loose joints and rails. Tell us at the start if the chair is valued as an antique, so the quote reflects how much of the original you want kept.
Do you cover Mottram St Andrew and Adlington?
Yes. Both share SK10 with Prestbury. Collection is priced by distance and confirmed in your quote, because this part of Cheshire East is outside Greater Manchester. Macclesfield also shares SK10 but has its own page, as does Alderley Edge to the west.
Can I bring a chair to Stalybridge instead of arranging collection?
Yes, and dropping it off is free. The workshop is at 40-42 Grosvenor Street, Stalybridge, about 35 minutes from Prestbury, open Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 2. You can choose fabric in the showroom while you are there.
