A long way for one small chair
Worsley is a long way round the M60 from Stalybridge, about thirty-five minutes each way. Collection from M28 is around £75 + VAT for both journeys, the same as anywhere in Greater Manchester outside our immediate area. That works well for a suite or a set of chairs and less well for a single footstool, and we will say so if we think the numbers do not suit the job. We do not get many jobs from M28, so each one is planned on its own date. Sending photos first means nobody makes the trip until the price and the plan are agreed.
Pieces that repay the journey
If your house around the Green, along the canal or out towards Boothstown holds a sofa or chair that was expensive when it was bought, it is probably the kind of piece that repays the journey. A sofa or armchair with a hardwood frame and sprung seat can be recovered several times over its life, and each time the springs, webbing and fillings are renewed as well as the cover. A period chair may need traditional work: springs tied by hand, and stuffing built up and stitched to shape rather than a slab of foam. That is slow bench work and it is what the workshop was built around.

Choosing the fabric first
When a piece is worth keeping, the fabric decision matters more than anything else we do to it. We buy from specialist mills and keep their ranges in the showroom at the workshop, hundreds of fabrics plus real and faux leathers. The fabric library is a good place to start a shortlist, and the showroom is where to settle it with the samples in your hand.

Dining chairs and headboards
A set of dining chairs is one of the jobs that suits the distance best, because six or eight chairs travel in one collection. Drop-in seats are the simplest; sprung or stuffed seats take longer, and the set usually sits within our normal two to four weeks for domestic work.
