Recycled and natural fibres

The eco options, without the greenwash.

Reupholstery is already the low-waste choice. Recovering a frame keeps a whole sofa out of landfill, and an older hardwood frame will usually outlast anything new at the same money. If you want to go further than that, three of the ranges we stock have something real behind the word. We will show you the mill's own paperwork rather than a badge we invented.

Cristina Marrone

Messina, Adrano, Circo

Messina and Adrano are woven from 100% recycled polyester yarn, and Circo is part recycled. Their GreenFR flame-retardant coating is halogen-free and accredited to ZDHC wastewater standards, so a recycled fabric can still be treated for commercial use.

Agua Fabrics

VerdEco

Woven from 100% recycled fibres with no water used in production, and still certified Crib 5, BS 5852 and IMO Annex 1. Breathable and bleach cleanable, so recycled and compliant on the same job: hospitality, workplace, marine.

Art of The Loom

Natural fibres, woven in Britain

Wool, linen, cotton and viscose only, with a Buy British ethos behind UK weaving and finishing. Six British woven Shetland wool collections, hand woven Harris Tweed, and the Herriot collection.

Ask for the recycled or natural-fibre books when you visit and we will pull them off the wall. For a commercial job we send the composition and the fire certificate with the sample pack, so your specifier can check the claim instead of taking our word for it.

What to look for

Picking fabric isn’t just colour.

  • Rub test (Martindale). 15,000+ for general domestic, 25,000+ for heavy domestic, 40,000+ for contract and hospitality.
  • Fire safety: inherent vs treated. All UK upholstery covers must meet the 1988 Furniture Fire Safety Regulations, and Crib 5 is the standard for commercial and contract work. Nearly any fabric can get there. Some ranges leave the mill inherently Crib 5, with the fire resistance built into the fibre; the rest are sent away for FR treatment and come back certified. Either route gives you the certificate for your compliance file, and IMO certification for marine work is specified the same way. Inherent FR is the one that keeps its rating through years of cleaning and wear, so tell us the job and we'll say which route the fabric you like takes.
  • Pattern repeat. Bigger repeats need more metres to match cushions, arms and back panels. We calculate this for you so you don’t under-order.
  • Wipe-clean vs woven. Agua’s technical fabrics look like fabric and behave like vinyl — ideal for kids, pets, kitchens and caravans.
  • Leather grades. Crest, Futura and Nene Valley cover the spectrum from full-grain residential to performance leathers built for contract and hospitality wear.
