Finished Tameside College cabin crew training cabin with recovered seats and embroidered antimacassars

Tameside College commissioned the recover of a set of original Boeing 747 seats used in their cabin crew training programme. The college trains air stewards and stewardesses, and the seats are part of the working mock-up trainees use to learn service routines, safety drills and passenger interaction in something close to a real cabin. This sits in our education and film, TV and production work – training mock-ups, set pieces and high-spec recovers that have to look right under hard use.

The before shot from the cabin floor shows the job as it really arrives: shells and foam in place, wiring and controls still live around the seats, and a craftsman on site with templates rather than a sterile studio set-piece. Contract work rarely looks tidy until the last panel is on.

Because the seats aren’t going back into a flying aircraft, the brief wasn’t airline regulatory spec – it was visual authenticity plus hard-wearing build for daily classroom use. That meant a contract-grade upholstery fabric chosen for durability and appearance, good-quality foam appropriate for high-traffic seating, and the original stitching pattern replicated so the seats still read as genuine cabin seats from the trainee’s seat back. Related detail work: the Tameside College antimacassars we produced for the same training environment.

The hardest part was the stitching: the 747 seats use a distinctive twin-needle topstitch with a specific gauge that no off-the-shelf machine produces. We sourced the right needle plate, ran sample panels until the gauge was right, and built every panel on the same setup so the seats matched as a set.

Alongside the seats we produced a matching set of antimacassars with the Tameside College logo embroidered on them, so the trainee cabin reads as a branded environment rather than a generic mock-up.

A month of intermittent work alongside the rest of the workshop jobs. The seats are now back in service at the college, taking daily use from groups of trainees – which is exactly the test we wanted them built for.

Tameside College were over the moon with the classroom refit – they said the seats look better now than when they first got them.
