Upholstery for schools, colleges and universities
Education seating needs to survive daily use, pass the right fire spec and come back before term starts. We recover schools, colleges and university seating – from auditoriums and classrooms to bleacher areas – right across Greater Manchester and the North-West, from our Stalybridge workshop in Tameside. Every job comes with itemised quotes, PO-friendly paperwork and holiday-window scheduling agreed before work starts.
School furniture upholstery
School furniture upholstery is the bread and butter of our education work. We recover classroom chairs, library reading seats, staff-room and reception furniture, and the worn stacking chairs that take a battering every period. Frames are checked, fixings tightened and foam replaced to grade before recovering in Crib 5 contract weaves or wipe-clean Agua vinyls that shrug off spills. Schools across Tameside and the wider North-West send us tired estates and get back seating specified for another decade of use.
College seating reupholstery
College seating reupholstery covers the bigger, fixed installations – lecture theatres, tip-up auditorium seats and bleacher runs that loose chairs can’t replace. We recover tip-up mechanisms in situ where it makes sense, rebuild seat pans and backs, and re-cover in Crib 7 where a fire risk assessment demands it. We’ve worked with Tameside College on aircraft simulator seating and crested antimacassars, so colleges across Greater Manchester get a contractor who understands both the spec and the shutdown window.
University common room seating
University common room seating earns its keep – common rooms, halls-of-residence lounges, study spaces and breakout areas all see constant, mixed use. We reupholster sofas, tub chairs, bench banquettes and study booths in contract-grade fabrics that resist wear, staining and the occasional spilt coffee. From our Stalybridge base we serve universities and student-accommodation providers right across the North-West, recovering whole lounges in a single holiday window rather than replacing them.
Crib 5 contract upholstery for the education estate
Education buildings sit under strict fire regulations, so Crib 5 contract upholstery is the baseline for our school and college work. We carry Crib 5 as standard and specify Crib 7 where your risk assessment requires it, documenting the fabric, foam, fire rating, quantities and return schedule on every quote. Whether it’s classroom chairs, an auditorium refit or bleacher seating, Greater Manchester estates managers get compliant paperwork that satisfies procurement and the fire officer alike.
Holiday-window scheduling across the North-West
Education estates have two problems: the seating sees brutal use, and you can only touch it in holiday windows. We work to both. The whole job – strip, transport, recover, return, install – fits between the last day of term and the first day back. We’ve done full lecture theatres in two weeks and library refits in one. Where the window isn’t long enough for the full estate, we’ll phase it across the academic year – auditorium first, common rooms next, classrooms last – coordinating collection and delivery around your North-West site.

Common questions in education.
- How long does reupholstery take?
- Most domestic projects take two to four weeks from collection to delivery. Caravans usually run two to three weeks. Single dining chairs are often back within a week. We agree the timeline up front and stick to it.
- Do you collect and deliver?
- Yes. We collect and deliver across Greater Manchester for a small charge. The fee depends on distance and size; we'll confirm it in your quote.
- What guarantee do you offer?
- Workmanship is guaranteed, with a two-year craftsmanship guarantee on production and contract work. Fabric durability is governed by the supplier's own rub-test rating; we'll explain that when you choose.
- Do you supply Crib 5 fire-rated foam and fabric for pubs, restaurants and venues?
- Yes. All hospitality, commercial and public-sector work uses combustion-modified foam and fabrics tested to BS 5852 Crib 5 (and Crib 7 where the spec requires it). We provide the test certificates with every quote and again when the job is signed off.
- Do you do commercial and hospitality jobs?
- Yes. Pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels, offices, healthcare, retail, schools, colleges and universities. We work to fire safety regulations (Crib 5 where required) and around your trading hours.
- Are you fire-safety compliant?
- Yes, At Valley Upholstery, all our domestic upholstery meets British Standards BS 5852/BS 7176 for fire safety, and we also supply combustion-modified foam where the use case requires it. The cigarette and match tests required for home upholstery (often BS 5852) are critical safety assessments for upholstery fabrics, designed to prevent fires by simulating common ignition sources. A smouldering cigarette must not cause ignition or smouldering, while a lit match (or equivalent flame) held for 20 seconds must not cause sustained flaming. These tests are essential for UK home safety compliance. Commercial upholstery fire safety - fabrics in the UK must adhere to strict regulations, primarily requiring BS 5852 Crib 5 testing for high-risk areas like offices, hotels, and restaurants. Common materials include treated polyester, wool blends, and vinyl, which are designed to withstand smouldering cigarettes and butane flames.
- Do you offer free quotes?
- Yes. Free, no-obligation quotes by phone, email, in shop or, for larger jobs, on site.
