The detail
Questions people ask about restaurants & cafés seating.
A restaurant sits people down at the same few spots every night, and the seating shows it long before the kitchen does. The corner booth that always fills first splits along the seat edge, the banquette by the window packs flat where one person always sits, and the bar chairs by the pass lose their covers at the footrest. We recover restaurant and café seating across Manchester, Tameside, Stockport and Trafford from our workshop in Stalybridge.
Booths and banquettes
A booth run is the biggest single item in most dining rooms, so we price it after a look at how it is built. Restaurant booth reupholstery is quoted per linear metre, with seat-only runs at the lower end and seat, back and curved or fluted runs at the upper end. A straight booth with a plain back is a very different job from a fluted, buttoned or curved one, and the quote says which you have. Where a run is fixed to the wall or floor and cannot move, we recover it in place; where it lifts out, sections come back to the workshop to be stripped, re-foamed and rebuilt. The structure underneath is usually sound, which is why recovering costs a fraction of replacing.
One booth seat, matched to the run
Restaurant booth repair is often a single seat: a split seam, a burst seat front, a cushion that has gone to nothing. We recover that one seat and match it to the others. The honest part is matching, because fabric that has faded over a few years will not sit identically beside new cloth. We tell you before quoting whether a single seat will pass beside the old ones or whether recovering the whole booth is the better call. The detail is on our pub and booth seating page, which also covers per-metre pricing.
Café fixed seating
Café banquettes tend to be shorter runs along a wall or window, often with a bench base built by a joiner and a thin pad on top. We rebuild the pad on the existing base, replace foam that has collapsed, and recover in a fabric that survives a coffee spill. Where the base itself has shifted or the plywood has cracked, that is quoted as a separate line so you can see what is wear and what is repair.
Dining chairs, in batches
Loose chairs are recovered in matched batches so the room does not end up with two shades of the same green. A seat pad that has only worn on top is the cheapest job; chairs with seat and back padding cost more, and a loose frame is tightened and reglued first. A batch can go through the workshop while the chairs you are not using stay on the floor. See dining chair reupholstery for the types we cover, and bar stool reupholstery for stools and bar chairs at the counter or coffee bar.
Wipe-clean vinyl or fabric
Most restaurants choose between a wipe-clean vinyl or faux leather and a woven contract fabric. Vinyl cleans with a damp cloth between covers, takes a sauce splash without a mark, and is the usual choice for booths and the seats nearest the kitchen. Woven fabric reads warmer and suits quieter rooms, bar areas and evening-only service, but it needs a regular clean and shows wear sooner. Faux leather sits between the two. Send us a photo of the room and we will say which has lasted best in similar places.
Crib 5 and the handover pack
Public seating must pass Crib 5, over combustion-modified foam. Where the fabric you like is not natively Crib 5, we have it treated and certificated. When the job is finished you receive a handover pack with the Crib 5 certificates and care instructions, ready for your insurer, your licence file or the fire-risk assessment. The same standard applies at our hotel work, including the Townhouse brasserie in Manchester.
Working around service
Tell us when you are shut. Loose chairs and stools can leave in batches and come back before service; a single banquette can turn around overnight; a longer run is split into sections and done on closed days, so a dining room never loses all its seating at once. For a full-room refit we plan the sequence backwards from your reopening date. This is the same phased approach we use across the wider hospitality sector.
What to send
A photo of each type of seat, roughly how many metres of fixed seating you have, how many chairs and stools, which days you are closed, and any colour or fabric you must match. A restaurant quote request takes a few minutes, or send the photos on WhatsApp. We price it itemised and, for venue jobs, visit free before the final figure.
Where we work
Restaurant and cafe seating from our Stalybridge workshop reaches Stalybridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Dukinfield, Mossley, Denton, Glossop, Oldham, Stockport, Manchester and Salford. Booths and banquettes are phased around service, and the site visit is free for venue jobs within about 15 miles of the workshop (further afield by arrangement).

Frequently asked
Common questions in restaurants & cafés.
- How long does reupholstery take?
- Most domestic projects take two to four weeks from collection to delivery. Caravans usually run two to three weeks. Single dining chairs are often back within a week. We agree the timeline up front and stick to it.
- Can you repair a single damaged restaurant booth seat rather than recovering the whole run?
- Yes. If one booth or banquette section has split, sagged or burst at a seam we can repair or recover just that seat and colour-match the fabric to the rest of the run. We will tell you honestly when a single-seat repair will look right against the others and when a fuller recover is the better call.
- Can you reupholster our bar and pub seating without closing the venue?
- In most cases, yes. We rotate fixed bench, booth and banquette sections through our Stalybridge workshop a part at a time, and recover loose bar stools and chairs in batches, so you never lose more than a small share of seating at once. For larger refits across Greater Manchester we phase the work around quiet days, closure windows or overnight slots agreed before we start.
- Do you supply Crib 5 fire-rated foam and fabric for pubs, restaurants and venues?
- Yes. All hospitality, commercial and public-sector work uses combustion-modified foam and fabrics tested to BS 5852 Crib 5 (and Crib 7 where the spec requires it). We provide the test certificates with every quote and again when the job is signed off.
- Are you fire-safety compliant?
- Yes, At Valley Upholstery, all our domestic upholstery meets British Standards BS 5852/BS 7176 for fire safety, and we also supply combustion-modified foam where the use case requires it. The cigarette and match tests required for home upholstery (often BS 5852) are critical safety assessments for upholstery fabrics, designed to prevent fires by simulating common ignition sources. A smouldering cigarette must not cause ignition or smouldering, while a lit match (or equivalent flame) held for 20 seconds must not cause sustained flaming. These tests are essential for UK home safety compliance. Commercial upholstery fire safety - fabrics in the UK must adhere to strict regulations, primarily requiring BS 5852 Crib 5 testing for high-risk areas like offices, hotels, and restaurants. Common materials include treated polyester, wool blends, and vinyl, which are designed to withstand smouldering cigarettes and butane flames.
- Do you offer free quotes?
- Yes. Free, no-obligation quotes by phone, email, WhatsApp, in shop or, for larger jobs, on site. Unsure how it will look? Send photos of the piece, rough sizes, and the style or fabric you have in mind. We will send a written quote with example looks so you can decide with confidence. Looks are a guide (not a guarantee of exact fabric match); final finish is confirmed in the quote.
Booths split, chairs sagging?
Send photos, a rough count and the days you are closed. We will price it itemised and plan the work around service.
